This painting is part of a group of paintings that can be situated in the direct circle of the renowned master Abraham Janssen van Nuyssen (Antwerp, ca. 1573 - 1632). Recent art historic research has revealed that especially two artists active in this circles have been responsible for these Allegorical paintings, namely Jan Van den Hoecke (Antwerp, 1611 - 1651) en Abraham Janssen II (Antwerp 1616 - after 1668). This painting, which symbolises ‘Touch’, one of the five senses, is not based on an existing composition by Janssens van Nuyssen (who painted a comparable series), but counts as an original invention.
