Pieter or Peeter Gijsels was in 1641 a pupil of the painter Johannes Boots. He became master of the Antwerp Guild of St.Luke in 1648. In 1650 he married Joanna Huybrecht. The couple had six children and one of his sons named Pieter too, became a painter like his father. According to Houbraken, Pieter Gijsels was a pupil of Jan Brueghel the Younger and made small finely painted landscapes populated with figures. Houbraken saw views of the Rhine by him that were quite good, done in the manner of Herman Saftleven.
