CATALOGUE NOTE
After having studied in the Antwerp workshop of Gillis Mostaert, Soens left for Italy in 1573, where he worked in the Vatican workshop headed by Lorenzo Sabatini and later in Parma at the court of the Dukes Farnese. Here he acquainted himself with the typical late-Mannerist style that would characterise most of his Italian works. Under the name of Giovanni Salamandro Fiamingo he was a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. The colour scheme and panoramic composition with an elevated foreground of the present work relates to Lanscape with deer hunt, dated ‘1590’, kept in the collection of the Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch (inv. nr. 15576), suggesting a date in last quarter of the 16th Century, ca. 1580-1600.
