CATALOGUE NOTE
We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Rudi E.O. Ekkart and Drs. Claire van den Donk for their kind assistance in cataloguing this portrait. Ekkart and Van den Donk believe that the portrait can be convincingly attributed to an at present unidentified Master from The Hague and date the picture to ca. 1660 – 1665 (correspondence dd. 21 October 2024). This charming portrait was previously given to the Anglo-Dutch painter Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen I (London 1593 – Utrecht 1661). A letter of authenticity from Georgetown University compares the present work with a three-quarter length portrait by Van Ceulen in the collection of the Utrecht Centraal Museum (inv.nr. 1952.159). The RKD in The Hague has the portrait recorded as by Simon Pietersz. Verelst (The Hague 1644 – London ca. 1710/6) under nr. 393065. In addition the influence of the The Hague portraitist Jan Mijtens (ca. 1614 – 1670) is also apparent. In addition, an attribution to Wallerant Vaillant (Lille1623 – Amsterdam 1677) has been suggested. Nevertheless, this fine picture displays a distinct style that does not related convincingly with the hands all of the above mentioned Masters. Its quality however is notable, as are the details in the hair and the remarkable colours in the turquoise dress and scarf.
