CATALOGUE NOTE
Fredrik Marinus Kruseman was born in Haarlem, where he took his first steps as an artist. Around 1835, he moved to Hilversum, where he received lessons from Jan van Ravenswaay. Here he met B.C. Koekkoek. After a short stay in Haarlem, he moved to Kleve to receive more guidance from Koekkoek. The following three years had a lasting influence on his work. From that moment on, he painted romantic landscapes, of which the present picture is a fine example. He spent the last forty years of his life in Brussels. This landscape with a fantasy castle was painted in 1851 in Brussels. The same type of castle with one tower can also be seen in various other paintings, such as a winter landscape that was with Mac Connal Mason.
